Meal Preparation & Grocery Shopping in Bala Cynwyd, PA

Meal planning, shopping and home-cooked food — built around real dietary needs.

Caregiver preparing a nutritious home-cooked meal for a senior

Daley Hope Health Care provides in-home meal planning, grocery shopping and meal preparation for seniors and adults across Bala Cynwyd and the surrounding Lower Merion communities.

What does in-home meal preparation include?

Meal preparation covers menu planning, grocery shopping, cooking meals in the client’s own kitchen, and accommodating dietary requirements. Caregivers also handle kitchen cleanup and can portion meals for later in the week.

For many older adults the barrier is not appetite but effort — standing at a counter, carrying bags in from the car, managing a stove safely. Removing that effort is often what restores regular eating.

Can caregivers follow a doctor-recommended diet?

Yes. Caregivers prepare meals around dietary requirements and preferences, and the care plan documents them so the requirement travels with the client rather than living in one caregiver’s memory.

Because care plans are built and supervised by Samera Daley, a CNA with more than 20 years of experience, dietary restrictions are treated as part of the care plan rather than an afterthought.

Dietary situationWhat the caregiver does
Low-sodium or heart-healthyPlans and cooks to the restriction; reads labels while shopping
Diabetic-friendlyConsistent meal timing and portioning alongside medication reminders
Soft or easy-to-chew foodsPrepares textures the client can manage safely
Poor appetite / weight lossSmaller, more frequent meals and familiar favorites
Limited mobility in the kitchenFull shopping, cooking and cleanup so no standing is required
Living alonePortions extra meals for days without a scheduled visit

Does the caregiver do the grocery shopping?

Yes. Caregivers shop for groceries, either on the client’s behalf or with them, which for many older adults is the outing itself.

Shopping trips also double as transportation and companionship. Because caregivers drive clients, we check driving records during screening — a step Pennsylvania does not require.

Is meal preparation covered by any program in Montgomery County?

Medicare does not pay for non-medical meal preparation. Two public programs in Montgomery County can, and Daley Hope accepts both private-pay and Community HealthChoices clients.

The Montgomery County OPTIONS program provides care management and in-home services to residents age 60 or older who have significant unmet needs affecting daily functioning. Covered services include Personal Care Services, Home Support Services, Home Delivered Meals, and Emergency Response Systems. It is income-based — enrolled older adults share in the cost based on income and the amount of services received.

Pennsylvania’s Community HealthChoices program is a Medicaid initiative built to help older Pennsylvanians and adults with physical disabilities remain in their communities rather than in facilities. Enrollees must be 21 or older and receive both Medicare and Medicaid, receive Medicaid long-term supports through a waiver, or be receiving Medicaid-paid nursing facility care.

Outside those programs, care is billed hourly with clear, upfront pricing and no long-term contracts.

Montgomery County’s OPTIONS program separately funds Home Delivered Meals for homebound older adults, which some families combine with in-home preparation for the days a caregiver is not scheduled.

Is the agency licensed and are caregivers screened?

Pennsylvania requires home care agencies to be licensed and to screen every direct care worker. Under the Department of Health’s home care requirements, agencies established after December 12, 2009 must obtain a license before providing services, must conduct criminal background checks on all staff, and must conduct TB screens for direct care workers with consumer contact. Chapter 611 of the Pennsylvania Code adds face-to-face interviews and references before hire (§ 611.51), demonstrated competency (§ 611.55), and consumer protections including fee transparency and a complaint process (§ 611.57).

Daley Hope goes past those minimums: we require three references, drug screening, and driving record checks on caregivers, and every care plan is built and supervised by founder Samera Daley, a certified nursing assistant with more than 20 years of experience.

Can meal preparation be a standalone service?

Yes. Some families book meal preparation alone, often two or three times a week, with meals portioned for the days in between.

Care can often begin the next day after a consultation. There is no one-size-fits-all hour minimum — Samera builds a custom care plan around the individual, so families can start with the schedule that actually fits rather than the smallest block an agency will sell.

Frequently asked questions

Do you shop with my parent or for them?

Either. Some clients want the trip out of the house; others prefer the groceries simply arrive and get put away.

Can meal prep be combined with personal care?

Yes. Many plans pair a morning personal care visit with meal preparation for the day.

Do caregivers cook in our kitchen or bring food in?

Meals are prepared fresh in your loved one’s own kitchen, using their own preferences and familiar foods.

Does Medicare pay for meal preparation?

No. Medicare does not cover non-medical services, though Montgomery County OPTIONS or Community HealthChoices may, depending on eligibility.
